Should I use paraffin oil to treat the entire interior of the sauna?
Paraffin oil is best used on the benches, backrests, and other high-touch areas. These surfaces benefit most because the oil helps protect the wood from sweat, dirt, and moisture while keeping it easy to clean. It’s generally not necessary to treat the entire interior (walls and ceiling), as leaving those areas untreated allows the wood to breathe naturally.
Which is better, paraffin oil or sauna wax, for treating wood surfaces?
Paraffin oil penetrates into the wood, offering moisture protection without creating a surface film. It’s heat-stable, odorless, and ideal for sauna environments.
Wax sits more on the surface, forming a protective coating. While it can enhance appearance, it’s less commonly recommended inside saunas because it doesn’t absorb as well and can be more affected by heat.
How should I care for my sauna?
In short, use paraffin oil on benches and backrests is the preferred and recommended approach for most saunas. Sauna paint is more commonly used for treating the exterior of the sauna, while wax can be used for both the interior and exterior.
